Rainbow Week

Anti-bullying Week 2018: Choose Respect

Anti-Bullying Week was coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance.  The aims of the week were to help children understand:
    • The definition of respect

    • That bullying is a behaviour choice

    • That we can respectfully disagree with each other i.e. we don’t have to be best friends or always agree with each other but we do have to respect each other

    • That we all need to choose to respect each other both face to face and online

Each afternoon, the classes took part in activities that encouraged them to think about how special and unique they were.
Find out what each class got up to below:
Reception

Reception class explored the value of 'respect' through the story of 'The Rainbow Fish'. The story was chosen to help the children to gain an understanding that we are all special and unique in our own way and we should treat others with respect with all of our words and actions. The essential questions the we explored on the day were: What makes you special and unique? How can you show that to others in a kind and respectful?

We also began exploring the value of 'perseverance'. Children were given tricky knots to untie and when they got frustrated, the other children shouted out phrases of encouragement to ensure they did not give up!
Year 1

In Year 1 we used the story of Monty the Manatee to explore ideas of respect and friendship.   We learnt about how to be a good friend and about how the things we say to people can be hurtful.  We also looked at this in the context of the internet.
Year 2
In Year 2, we discussed what bullying is and who to turn to if you need any help. We also focused on our value of respect. What does it mean to you? What should it look like in our classroom? We then worked on a joint piece of artwork with a partner, showing the value of respect when working with others.
Year 3

We learnt about how we can ‘feed’ our brain so we can learn as much as possible. We are all capable of learning but we must look after our body if we are to achieve our absolute best!

In Year 3 we revised what bullying is and compared it to falling out with a friend. We all fall out with our friends but bullying is much more serious! It is unfair; happens repeatedly and is done on purpose. We create 'Inside Helper' hero characters to help us when we feel sad or angry. Our hero character is within us and can help as these times.

We acted out different bullying scenarios and ranked possible ways we would or would not tackle a scenario. Also, we learnt what a witness to bullying is and this can make a bullying situation worse if the witness does not act appropriately.

In line with this year's national theme of RESPECT, we made respect pledges with our hands to create a whole class display.
Year 4
In Year 4 we talked about how to have a healthy mind. We asked each other what made us happy and listed some things we are grateful for on our page of blessings.
