Safer Internet Day 2017

Safer Internet Day 2017

At Frome Valley, we dedicated a whole day to staying safe online every year.  This year, the overall focus of safer internet day was; ''Be the change: unite for a better internet'.  The day started with a whole school assembly which was about staying safe online when playing familiar games or doing searches for pictures online.  One of the most important things we learnt that was whenever anything happens that worries you or is not what you expect, you must tell an adult!

Reception Class

In reception class, we started by reading a story about 'Smartie the Penguin' who gets a new tablet for his birthday and starts playing games online.  He comes into a spot of bother when things start popping up them he is not expecting.  Mummy penguin taught us a song to help us decide what action to take if this ever happens to us.

"Before you tap and click, you need to stop and think! And tell someone!"

We then learnt about keeping our information safe and staying private online.  Miss Padfield taught us about passwords and explained that the more tricky they are to guess, the better.  Miss Padfield hid in the cupboard and wouldn't let us in unless we could get the password to get in.  None of us guessed it.  Miss Padfield said this was brilliant and exactly how it should be when using passwords online.  We had a go at making up our own passwords, some of them were really funny!
We made our own Smartie the Penguin to take home to remind us what to do to stay safe online!
Year 1

Year 1 began Internet Safety Day by thinking about what they liked and what made them special. They then cut out photos to represent themselves without giving away who's work it was (a bit like an online profile)! The rest of the class had to guess by using the photos as clues. This led us on to discuss why not to put personal information on the internet. The children were really shocked to know anyone could see their photo/information if they put it online - even strangers and the queen!!!
We then read the story of 'Smartie the Penguin' and what to do if you see something you are not sure about online. The story helped us with a rhyme -
'Before you click,click,click....you need to think,think,think...and tell someone'.

We discussed shutting the lid/turning off the device and telling an adult if we see something we are not sure about. We finished off the day by making our own Smartie the Penguin masks.
Year 2

In Year 2 we looked at what makes a website suitable for children. We got to try out some brilliant websites and took a vote to decide our favourite one. Then we made traffic lights to help remind us about safe searching on the Internet.

Later on we read the story 'Digiduck's Big Decision'. In the story, Digiduck has to decide whether to post a photo of his friend, Proud.Pig, looking silly. Wise Owl from the 'Farmyard Website' takes him on a magical journey to discover what might happen if he decides to share the photo online.

We used pictures from the book to retell the story, making up our own endings. You will have to read them to find out what Digiduck decides to do!
Year 3

First, looked at different emojis and discussed what we thought they each meant. Leading into how they could also be misunderstood!

Then, we looked at a selection of photographs for which the children had to decide if they were real or edited. Some it was clear they were edited but others were a real surprise. This lead into discussion of the difference between photographs from the children's parents' era which are kept privately at home and are unchangeable compared with today's digital photograph that are often online for all to see and manipulate!

In the afternoon, we learnt about Powerful Passwords and Showing Respect online. The children learnt the dos and don't when creating a password. Also, how to best to word messages online and what to do if a message made them feel uncomfortable.
Year 4
Year 4 started the day by exploring the amount of information people can get from a picture. We asked "Does a picture really speak 1000 words?" and the children began to think more deeply about the amount of information that can be retrieved from a single picture of themselves.
We looked at a selection of photographs that had been shared online and tried to create a profile of the person sharing. Some were much easier than others!

We continued the theme of pictures being used to share thoughts and feelings online. The children explored the thousands of Emojis that are now available to communicate with each other. The children spent time writing Safer Internet Day messages using only Emojis! These can be seen below, can you work out what they say?

During the afternoon, the children completed the SID Post It activity. The focus of this activity was to simulate the impact of writing comments online to people that you have never met. The children went on a learning walk around the school, looking at pictures of different people. The children were invited to comment honestly (either in a positive or negative way) on the pictures. All Post Its were anonymous. The class then discussed the comments and the impact that these might have on a person if they were said face to face.
