World Book Day
World Book Day 2018
World Book Day was a little belated at Frome Valley this year, due to all of the snow, but we still celebrated the fantastic occasion in style. Children arrived at school dressed as characters from their favourite books and each class took part in themed activities linking to some popular children's stories!
A great day was had by all! Well done for all of the amazing costumes (and to the staff that joined in too!).
Reception
Reception spent the day looking at the book 'Potion Commotion' by Peter Bently. We loved picking out all of the descriptive language. Then, Miss Padfield told us that we were going to make our own potions under one condition, they had to rhyme! We write down our silly rhyming ingredients list, such as a rat, bat and a cat! Then, we made the messy potions explode in the afternoon!
Year 1
In Year 1 on World Book Day, we looked at the book The Snail and the Whale. We found out lots of facts about the Blue Whale and presented these facts on paper decorated by lots of whales!
We now know that the Blue Whale is the biggest animal in the world!
Year 2
We kicked off the day by reading 'Charlie Cook's Favourite Book' which takes a hilarious look at different genres from joke books to encyclopedias! Then we examined a selection of books on our tables and tried to sort them into the different genres. In pairs, we chose one to read/look at in more detail and then wrote a short review, giving it marks out of 10 for things like interest level, illustrations and ease of use.
In the afternoon we went on a hunt for clues to help us to complete a book alphabet challenge! This involved finding the answers to a range of book-related questions - but each answer had to start with a different letter of the alphabet. It was quite challenging but great fun! To round off the day we made bookmarks featuring our favourite book characters.
Year 3
For World Book Day, Year 3 learnt about and created comics! We learnt about the stages of making a comic and what needs to be considered when writing a comic, including watching clips from established comic writers. Then, the children planned, wrote, drew and coloured their own comic strip. The comic strips were entered into the DASP Comic Strip Competition....we are awaiting the winner announcements!
Year 4
A World of Literature
We started the morning by considering all the places that children can access or buy books. We created a digital map of Dorchester and were surprised at how many locations allowed us to access books and reading material. We also include places to purchase books and considered the value of e-books and audio books.
Our focus text was "Black Dog" by Levi Pinfold.
Synopsis
A black dog appears outside the Hope family's home. As each member of the household sees it and hides, the dog grows bigger and bigger. Only Small, the youngest Hope, has the courage to face the Black Dog. When it chases her through the forest she shows no fear, so it grows smaller and smaller. Finally, back to the size of a normal hound, the Black Dog is welcomed into the Hope household as their newest addition.
The children focused on how the author uses the beautiful illustrations in the book to bring the characters to life. We often see glimpses of the "beast" through windows and in the shadows before finally meeting the main character. This story encouraged a lot of discussion around facing our fears and how having Small Hope is often enough to see things in a different way. The children designed their own "beast " for a similar story.
Origami Bookmarks and Flip Books
During the afternoon, the children used their Design and Technology skills to create Origami Monster Bookmarks for their favourite texts and learnt how to make flip book comic strips.
