Amazing Animals: Minibeast Hunting

We have been enjoying our topic, 'Amazing Animals'. We have learnt about minibeast micro-habitats and went on a minibeast hunt in the forest school area to see if we could find them. We looked under logs, under stones and under the leaves on the trees. We have learnt that insects have six legs and three body parts; we had a closer look at the minibeasts in magnifying pots to see if we could spot the head, abdomen and thorax.
Minibeast Sculptures

We have been learning about sculptures in our DT and Art lessons. We used saltdough to make a minibeast sculpture. We knew that the minibeast had to have three body parts (head, abdomen and thorax) and 6 legs. We went outside and collected natural objects to use for the body parts, such as legs, wings and antenna.
Handa's Surprise

'Handa's Surprise' has been our key text this week and we have been learning more about the animals in the story and about Africa. We loved looking at the beautiful jewellery that people make and wear and decided to make our own, using examples of patterned African clothing as inspiration. We also had a go at carrying fruit in a basket on our head, just like Akeyo and Handa do in the story!

We tasted all of the fruits from the story too! We tried banana, mango, passion fruit, avacado, guava, pineapple and orange. We completed a taste test tick sheet to record which ones we liked and disliked and discussed with our friends why we felt that way. Some very funny faces were pulled as we tried the 'sour' passion fruit and the 'slimey' avacado!
