Summer 2023

Science
In Science, this half term, we have been learning about forces and magnets.  We had fun trying to make a paper clip float in the air, which looked like magic.  It was caused by the magnetic field, from the magnet, attracting the paper clip from a distance.
The Coronation of King Charles III
To celebrate the coronation of King Charles III, we made iced biscuits, decorated in red, white and blue icing), held a tea party with the whole school and created flags to wave.  As a bit of fun, year 3 set up a crazy royal-themed photo booth.
History
In history, we have been learning about prehistoric times.  Prehistoric means that it occured before we have any written records of what daily life was like.  Historians try to use clues to work out what life was like.  We made models of Stonehenge in its different stages of construction.  We also learned:
  • Work began on Stonehenge about 5,000 years ago, but it was built in stages over many years. The stone circle dates from about 2500 BC, in the late Neolithic period.
  • We don’t know exactly how the stones were brought to Stonehenge, but some of them – the bluestones – came from the Preseli Hills in south-west Wales, over 150 miles (250km) away.
  • The fact that the sun rises over the Heel Stone on the longest day of the year (summer solstice) and sets over it on the shortest day (winter solstice) suggests that it was a prehistoric temple aligned with the sun’s movements.
